The sweep picking technique is a smooth motion of picking all down strokes as you pick up the notes of a chord and then all up strokes as you descend on the chord.

It was made famous by Yngwie Malmsteen. Some have said it was given the name by Frank Gambale.

Regardless, it is a great technique and exercise to get your hands working together and to expand your picking skills.
