This past week I was the background music at a reception. I was the only performer.

A lot of times the client will be looking for a solo classical guitar or something similar. They definitely want to keep it simple.

I have been playing a lot of smooth jazz/blues lately so I decided to take some liberties and bring my “band” with me.

My setup area was about a 6′ by 2′ area. Not a bunch of room. Plus I had to keep the volume on the lower end.

After trying a few different possibilities I ended up with the a very basic setup.

Guitar -> Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 -> MacBook Pro

I played both my Cordoba nylon string flamenco guitar and my custom Ibanez RT150 electric.

The backing tracks were straight from YouTube. I also played along with my latest album as well.

The speakers I used were powered Polk Audio bookshelf speakers.

The setup was simple but it sounded great and fit the function well.

The lesson to be learned is that you don’t need a big PA or a bunch of gear to sound great. This simple setup fit right in my backpack.

Hopefully, this will give all of you solo guitarists out there some ideas for grabbing gigs when your band isn’t available.
